It is Helldivers 2!
Graham: Have you ever had a strange, funny friend, someday cut long hair, started wearing a shirt, and left all your Warhammer characters? He is “an adult”, he said, and – completely coincidentally – he has a luxurious girlfriend. We all just need to keep silent until he realized that she was so bad.
That’s the way I think of Helldivers 2. Arrows, famous manufacturers of Topdown, Slapstick, the friendly flames like Magicka and Helldivers first, shaved out the ‘rough’ edges to create their personality. Now they have made a shooting game that plays like everyone else. Sony is now their girlfriend.
The first joy of Helldivers 2 is to find out that my fear is wrong. It is worth noting that how many personalities of the studio appear, from the slap, friendly flames, bulky controls deliberately just begged you to throw away your weapons due to confusion.
The second is to find out that they did not apply too many direct services to be favored by new colleagues. Yes, you can completely unlock weapons and cosmetics through playing or through one or twice overcoming the real battle, but your arsenal starting is as basically as good as everything you will receive later. I played for dozens of hours with the weapon I had unlocked in the first year, and then unlocked only providing only a brief newness before I was with you.
The tasks of Helldivers 2 are also completely in size. Each person drops you on a planet that is filled with aliens or robots – in a way that any planet can be thought to be filled with its residents – and you have the task of transmitting, speaking, or destroying some large eggs. You will run back, blow away your friends with confusion (or purpose) a few times, relive some scenes from Starship Troopers, call in an air strike or five, and 15 minutes later you are obscured in the egg and make your best friend back on your spacecraft. That means I have never felt myself falling behind on any unlock curve and I can fit a Helldivers 2 session to my mature life completely well, performing a few tasks with a friend while the child is sleeping. In 2024, there were very few games many blockbuster players in that case.
Sometimes, that friend? Quickly transfer a few years and you realize that Posh girlfriend is still fine, really. She is his luxurious wife now. And their dining table? Covered in Warhammer characters.
Nic: I waited for a while to play Helldivers 2, and what surprised me most about it was the feeling of simulation and physical when playing – different from the Arcadey shooter that I imagined. Injuries. The way you need to choose and select to reload. The intensity of battles. By making practical meetings feel like serious things, Arrowhead allows the comedy to shine in other areas in knowledge, it is funny to be released by a POD if you get rid of the violent fire. Truly a genius tool.
Edwin: I still like to play this game alone. It has all the components for a great sand box in MGS5 tradition – I feel like everything they need to do is adjust the reproductive, but I’m sure it is not simple in reality. I am also interested in how they play the War Forever War as a direct service, inspired by the role -playing on the table. I think we need to start reporting it as if we were sympathetic to Automaton, reporting big order failures as victory. Each good propaganda needs a pirate radio to overthrow.
ED: One of the ‘things’ in my favorite game this year is The Barrage 380mm, bombarding a large area with bare shells for what feels like an absolute age. There was something very satisfied when it saw it reducing a giant fortress of the machine down on a pile of metal debris when it ended. I also like to call it literally in any goal (mostly small), just to really bother my friends. I am terrible, I know.
Brendy: You are Devil, ED. But that is the ugly type I like. I am not a loving person with Helldivers 2 like many people, but I have played enough to appreciate the comedy movie about going away desperately from your artillery attacks. Friendly fire in video games is always fun.
